My company, Usborne Books & More, just finished our Annual National Convention. The theme was “Next Level“. Each consultant registered for the convention received the Game Boy shown in the above picture (minus the Game Over wording & Victory Haven logo & website added by me). At first when I received mine I thought, “Now why in the world are they sending us this? My husband and I don’t play those games, and we don’t have children that will play them.” I was honestly disappointed in receiving it.
My perspective changed immensely after hearing all the speakers! I now believe that this was THE BEST theme and convention in the 27 years I’ve been with the company!! Many other long time consultants believe the same. It applies to so much of our lives, not just what we do with and for a company!
Have you ever played an arcade game and had the “Game Over!” words show up? How did you feel… Completely defeated? Frustrated? Rejected? Not good enough? Challenged to try again? Motivated?
In life have you ever felt like you were at the ‘end of your rope’, that the game was over for you? I know I have.
Twenty-eight years ago I was introduced to this unique educational book company called Usborne Books At Home (it’s original name) whose products drew the reader in like a magnet, allowing interaction with the content while giving trustworthy and valuable information on all subjects, reading levels and abilities. Initially I was dependent on a local consultant to provide me with a catalog and information on the products. BUT, that soon changed when I found it challenging to meet up with the local consultant. At that time there were only about 300 consultants nationwide, and NO website because the internet was so new. So, I decided to become a consultant myself. I was homeschooling my daughter so knew I’d be wanting MORE of these awesome products and did not want to miss out on anything just because of the challenge of getting together with a consultant. PLUS, at that time the company was small enough that the new catalog came every six months to our mailbox, I could get nice discounts on what we would use for our school, AND I KNEW the product would sell itself. I became consultant number 397.
I was extremely timid and shy, so if the product did not sell itself I would never have joined the company as a consultant. My very first presentation was in my home with a handful of friends. I apologized, with my head hung low, for inviting my friends to come spend money, but did manage to ask them if they wanted to buy any books. I was way out of my comfort zone for sure!!

How true and appropriate!!!
That’s exactly what I’ve had to do multiple times, not only with Usborne Books & More, but also life in general.
One year after becoming a consultant with Usborne Books & More my family moved to an area of the US where the schools have been ranked very near the bottom of the rankings for way too long, and no one had ever heard of UBAH. This meant I had to start all over again with ‘sticking my neck out’ and getting out of my comfort zone. It was not easy to say the least. I was struggling to get anyone to listen to me share about the product that I was so excited about, let alone make any sales. I did set up at a few festivals, but rarely made a sale. At one point I told my husband, “That’s it!! I’m DONE!! I’m throwing in the towel!”
Then the new catalog arrived in my mailbox. WOW!!! Was that a God thing or what!!! I fell in love with all the new products and decided that day that there would be NO MORE throwing in the towel/quitting. I was determined to do what it took to get to the NEXT LEVEL, to stick my neck out and get out of my comfort zone.
The journey has not been easy, but I’m so grateful for the personal growth that has happened because I stuck my neck out and moved out of my comfort zone!
An example of what I’ve learned to do to reach that Next Level was while attending a Business After Hours with the local Chamber of Commerce I had joined. An attendee asked me what kind of work I do. When I responded with, “I sell children’s books” her response was, “Oh!” and then she turned away from me and started a conversation with another attendee.
I went home that night determined to get to the Next Level. I realized I needed to change my terminology, my wording. Words really DO matter!
At that time I was not feeling ‘educated’ enough on our product to call myself a consultant. What I eventually came up with was Educational Resources Provider. That did open a few doors.
I’ve still had times when I thought I was done with this company. But each time Yahweh-God my Creator makes it clear that HE has not said “Game Over!” Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be celebrating 27 years with UBAM, or be so brave that promoting the product comes naturally just like breathing. Nor did I ever dream I’d make the costume of two characters in our books and WEAR those costumes and be comfortable in my own skin!
Romans 8:28 says, “All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.”
I honestly believe all of this learning to stick my neck out and getting out of my comfort zone with Usborne Books & More was preparing me for the outside-the-box journey and purpose Yahweh-God had ordained for me from the beginning. This was my ‘Bootcamp’. Thank You Yahweh-God for this journey!!!
